Karana – Community Bali | Indonesian Specialty Coffee

A Coffee Story from Bali

Discover Karana, a community coffee from the Kintamani region of Bali, Indonesia. Representing a collective of 377 smallholder farmers, Karana brings together local coffee-growing traditions, a focus on quality, and a spirit of experimentation.

The farms sit at an average elevation of 1,200 metres, where coffee cultivation is closely connected to Balinese cultural heritage. Farmers grow S795 and Kartika coffee varieties alongside oranges, vegetables, and other crops.

A Community Focused on Quality

Karana grew out of a collaboration between two coffee professionals who share a passion for producing exceptional coffee from Bali. By experimenting with processing methods, they aim to develop distinctive flavour profiles and explore the potential of coffee from the Kintamani region.

Across the wider community, farmers use a range of processing methods, including natural, washed, anaerobic, honey, and wet-hulled processing. Each method can influence the coffee's flavour and overall character in different ways.

Farming with the Environment in Mind

Sustainability is an important part of Karana's approach to agriculture. Contributing farmers use compost, avoid chemical sprays, and plant suitable overstory trees to help maintain ecological balance.

A new cooperative dry mill, funded through private donations, is also being developed to give farmers more accessible and efficient coffee-processing facilities during and after the harvest.

What Makes Community Coffee Special?

Community Coffees highlight a distinct local terroir or a particular segment of a cooperative or growers' group. These coffees are purchased at a small premium to help cover additional production costs and support a social initiative chosen by the community.

Karana reflects the potential of collaboration, local knowledge, and processing innovation in Bali's coffee-growing landscape. This community lot offers a closer look at the people and practices behind coffee from Kintamani.
