Nyakarenzo is one of the washing stations in Rwanda. For the occasion of the Cup of Excellence competition, the station crafted a special small lot with some of the best farmers in the community surrounding the station.

This small lot passed an intense quality control process from the moment the cherries arrived at the washing station all the way to the point where it ranked in the Cup of Excellence winning selection which awards the best coffees produced in Rwanda in 2018. First, the QC team at Rwacof’s lab selected the lot from hundreds of samples as one of the best coffees of that year. They submitted it to the Cup of Excellence competition, where a national jury selected it among again hundreds of participants. The lot consistently received a cupping score above 86 points from a trained jury of cupping experts. This jury reduces the number of lots to the 70 best coffees in the country.

In the next round, the international jury round, a panel of around 20 cuptasting experts from all over the world gathers in Rwanda. During this round, they evaluate all 70 best coffees and eliminate those that fall below 86 cup points.

Finally, the remaining selection of Rwanda’s best coffees is sold through an online auction platform to bidders all over the world. This makes prices reach levels far above the price levels for which specialty coffee from Rwanda is usually sold. Since the coffee is selected and recognized as the country’s best, the people in the supply chain who produced and helped transform this coffee receive a substantial reward for their efforts through this program.

To many coffee producers, ranking in the Cup of Excellence winners really is like winning a lottery ticket. The program celebrates coffee producers and coffee origins and gives more visibility to the elaborate process of creating unique specialty coffees.
